Best Engagement Photo Locations in Chicago

Choosing the right location for your engagement photos can shape how your entire session feels.

Some couples are drawn to architecture and city energy, while others prefer something quieter and more natural. The best location is one that feels like you and allows you to be present with each other.

Here are a few Chicago locations that work especially well for engagement sessions, each offering a different atmosphere depending on what you’re looking for.

Permit-Free Locations

University of Chicago

The University of Chicago has a quiet, historic feel that lends itself to something more timeless and romantic, and it’s one of my favorite locations to shoot.

Stone architecture, archways, and ivy-covered walls create a sense of calm and intention, with tucked-away corners that feel almost hidden from the city. It offers so much variety without ever feeling busy, which allows the focus to stay on you.

It’s a strong choice if you’re drawn to something classic and atmospheric without feeling overly formal.

Chicago Riverwalk

The Riverwalk brings in a more urban feel with clean lines, water reflections, and views of the city.

It works especially well in the evening when the lights start to come on, creating a slightly more cinematic and intimate atmosphere. It allows for movement and variety without feeling overly structured, which keeps the session relaxed while still feeling distinctly Chicago.

Chicago Cultural Center

The Cultural Center offers a refined, architectural setting with a softer, more intimate atmosphere inside.

The details here are subtle but impactful, from the grand staircases to the light filtering through the domes, creating a space that feels elevated without needing much direction.

Milton Lee Olive Park

Milton Lee Olive Park offers a quieter, more open setting with uninterrupted views of the lake and skyline.

Set just off the water, it feels calm and spacious, with the city rising in the distance rather than surrounding you. As the light softens later in the day, the reflections and skyline glow create a more atmospheric, cinematic feel.

Locations That Require Permits or Tickets

Some of Chicago’s most visually striking locations require a permit or admission fee, but they can offer a more refined or unique setting that’s worth considering.

If you’re drawn to something more architectural or curated, these spaces can add a different layer to your session.

Art Institute of Chicago

The exterior is freely accessible, but interior photography requires a ticket and adherence to museum guidelines.

Inside, the space offers a quiet, artistic setting that feels minimal and intentional, with soft light and clean compositions.

Garfield Park Conservatory

The conservatory offers a lush, indoor setting filled with greenery and filtered light.

It feels calm and immersive, especially in colder months when outdoor options are limited. Because it’s a popular location, sessions here typically require a permit and advance planning.

Lincoln Park Conservatory

Smaller and more intimate than Garfield Park, this space has a quieter, more delicate feel.

It’s well-suited for couples who want something natural but still contained and intentional. Permits are required, and timing can be more limited.
